Pasir Ris Greenbelt

I am very sad to hear that the Pasir Ris greenbelt has been cleared in 2 weeks for the construction of an international school. This beautiful woodlands in the heart of Pasir Ris, Singapore was rich in flora and fauna including the White-bellied Sea Eagles, red-breasted parakeets and kingfishers. It was not only important for the wildlife and nature, but was an important aspect of people’s lives for the past 30 years. It was a precious green space loved by all, and was cleared in 13 days. I really wished I had visited these amazing woodlands, before it was cut down mercilessly. Even though I feel  regret and sadness, I also feel proud that residents from all over Singapore came together to fight for their woodlands. We will always remember the Pasir Ris Woodlands, even though it is no longer there,  and it will be a reminder that our valuable green spaces must be preserved for the future generations to come.

The following video that was made by the Pasir Ris Greenbelt Facebook group brought me to tears. It was so inspiring to hear that so many people had come together to fight for this cause, as well as saddening to hear that a heritage that brought so much joy and happiness was cleared in a matter of weeks. I keep thinking about all the birds, insects and animals that lived there, and the poor parents who came back home to feed their babies, only to find their home destroyed.

“People nowadays cannot make the connection between actions and the environment, because they cannot love or feel for what is out there. Exposure and proximity to nature is critically important in improving the relationship between people and their natural environment”-Sean Yap
